QuillBot Review (2026): Is Premium at $8.33 Worth It?

What the Free and Premium plans allow today, what users say on three review platforms, and where the rewrites drift.

Summary

This QuillBot review finds a cheap, capable paraphraser with a tight free tier. Free caps each run at 100 words and two modes; Premium costs $8.33 a month billed yearly and unlocks nine modes plus custom ones. Across 14,852 reviews on Trustpilot, G2 and Capterra, users rate it 4.4 to 4.8 out of 5, but the recurring complaint is rewrites that shift meaning. Best for students and occasional editors, weaker for voice-critical professional prose.

7.4 /10

QuillBot is the best-value paraphraser we audited in 2026: Premium costs $8.33 a month billed yearly, and users rate it 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot (14,615 reviews). The catch is the free tier, capped at 100 words and two modes, and rewrites that sometimes shift meaning. Buy it for study and light editing. Skip it if your voice is the product.

This is an audit, not a hands-on benchmark of output quality. On 2 November 2026 we loaded QuillBot's home page, paraphraser and Premium page live, captured screenshots at 1440 by 900 pixels, and copied the plan comparison table as published. We then read the rating panels of Trustpilot, G2 and Capterra, and read the 25 most helpful Capterra reviews one by one to tag their complaints. Reddit threads were read from search excerpts only, so we use them as colour, never as numbers. We did not paraphrase our own test text, which means we make no claim about QuillBot's fidelity beyond what verified users report. Every calculation is labelled as ours.

Should you buy QuillBot Premium?

YES if you...

  • Students and researchers who paraphrase passages above 100 words and need citations and a plagiarism check in one subscription
  • Freelancers who want a cheap second pair of eyes on drafts at about $8.33 a month
  • Non-native English writers who want to compare several phrasings of one sentence before choosing
  • Anyone who only rewrites a few paragraphs a week and wants a synonym slider rather than a prompt box

NO if you...

  • Writers whose tone is the product, since users report rewrites that read mechanical or shift meaning
  • Anyone expecting rewrites to pass AI detectors reliably, because independent testers report roughly half pass
  • Teams that need an audit trail or brand voice rules, which sit in the Team plan rather than Premium
  • People who dislike mandatory sign-ups, since Trustpilot reviewers flag logins and strict daily free limits

ROI breakdown: Our calculation: twelve months at the $19.95 monthly rate cost $239.40, against $99.95 on the annual plan. That saves $139.45, or 58%, which matches the 58% badge on the page. Anyone paraphrasing weekly should go annual; anyone cramming for one term should pay monthly and cancel.

Hidden costs & gotchas
  • The annual plan is billed up front, and one verified Capterra reviewer reports being refused a prorated refund with 11 months left
  • The plagiarism checker is capped at 25,000 words a month even on Premium
  • Several useful panels in the paraphraser, including History, Compare Modes and Tone, carry a Premium crown

What does the free paraphraser give you on 2 November 2026?
Six mode tabs and a More menu are visible (Standard, Fluency, Humanize, Formal, Academic, Simple), but the plan table limits Free to Standard and Fluency and 100 words. The synonym slider is on screen. History, Compare Modes and Tone carry a Premium crown.

What does QuillBot now put in front of a new visitor?

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Price per month is low for what is bundled At $8.33 a month billed annually you get the paraphraser, grammar checker, plagiarism checker, summarizer and citation tools in one subscription.
  • You steer the rewrite instead of accepting it The synonym slider and per-word synonym menu let you choose how many words change, and Compare Modes lets you set several modes against each other.
  • Strong sentiment among everyday users Trustpilot shows 4.8 from 14,615 reviews and Capterra 4.5 from 157, with ease of use scoring 4.6 on Capterra.

Cons

  • Free plan is tight: 100 words and two modes Trustpilot's own summary names strict daily limits and mandatory logins as the main dissatisfaction, and one Capterra reviewer calls the cap 'a little annoying'.
  • Rewrites can drift from the original meaning In our tally of the 25 most helpful Capterra reviews, 9 mention outputs that change the sentence's meaning, read mechanical, or barely change anything.
  • Detector-proofing is unreliable An independent tester found about half of QuillBot rewrites passed an AI detector, and a Reddit thread reports an 85% AI flag on Turnitin despite Premium.
  • Billing and support complaints exist among verified users A two-year subscriber on Capterra reports a refused prorated refund and unresponsive support; Capterra customer service averages 4.2, below ease of use at 4.6.
Verdict

Final verdict

7.4 /10

QuillBot earns 7.4 out of 10 as a paraphraser you rent cheaply and supervise closely. The strongest argument is arithmetic: $8.33 a month billed yearly buys a rewriter with nine preset modes, a synonym slider, a plagiarism checker and 4.8 stars from 14,615 Trustpilot reviewers. The strongest argument against is also arithmetic: 9 of the 25 most helpful Capterra reviews describe rewrites that distort meaning or read flat, and the free plan stops at 100 words.

Our advice has three parts. Try the free tier on a paragraph you know well, and judge only whether it kept your meaning. Pay monthly for one term if you are a student, and move to the annual plan only after you have used it every week. Never submit a rewrite without rereading it against the original, and never count on it to beat a detector.

If your own phrasing is what clients pay for, a rewriter that changes words without asking why will cost you more than $8.33 in edits.

Common questions

Is QuillBot free to use?
Yes, with limits. The Free plan paraphrases up to 100 words per run in two modes, Standard and Fluency. Premium removes the cap and adds nine preset modes plus custom modes.
How much does QuillBot Premium cost?
The pricing page shows $8.33 a month billed annually ($99.95 a year). A third-party listing and our catalog give $19.95 on a monthly plan, so paying yearly saves about 58%.
Is QuillBot worth it for professional writing?
For light editing and comparing phrasings, yes. For voice-critical work, reviewers report outputs that read mechanical or shift meaning, so every rewrite needs a human reread.
Does QuillBot content pass AI detectors?
Not reliably. One independent reviewer found about half of rewrites passed a detector, and a Reddit user reports an 85% Turnitin flag despite Premium. Treat any bypass claim as unproven.
How many languages does the QuillBot paraphraser support?
The plan table lists paraphrasing in 23 languages as a Premium feature, and grammar correction in 6 languages.
Is QuillBot better than Grammarly for rewriting?
They solve different problems. QuillBot is built around choosing how much to rephrase; Grammarly centres on correction and tone inside your documents. Many writers pay for one and use the other free.
Can I get a refund on QuillBot Premium?
Check the refund terms before paying annually. A verified Capterra reviewer reports a refused prorated refund with 11 months remaining, so a monthly plan is the safer first purchase.
